My favourite beauty products

Beauty Buff? Not me.

I was recently asked to write a post on how I do my make-up. This request seriously surprised me, as I certainly wouldn’t consider myself a beauty buff at all – but hey, if you want it, you got it.

My everyday make-up doesn’t really vary – and it hasn’t varied for years! Branching out is good, but when you find a look you feel comfortable in, trying other styles can seem a bit alien.

This post only contains high-street products, I’m certainly not the kind of blogger who shops at the YSL and Chanel beauty counters. If only my budget would stretch that far! There’s a lot of Revlon, Rimmel and Collection products in this post – so it’s all affordable, should something catch your eye.

Enjoy!

I’ve been through a lot, and I mean a lot, of foundations in my time. I’m currently pretty impressed by the Revlon Colorstay foundation pictured here – the coverage is fantastic and it goes on like a dream. Initially it does look very pale (which is a new experience for my ivory complexion), but it oxidises to a darker colour after it’s applied, so you look far less ghostly. My only complaint is that this foundation is bottled with no pump, which makes it a little harder to apply. I used to be an ‘apply with fingers’ kinda girl, but I’ve recently switched to a brush, which seems to work well with this foundation. I mostly use ELF brushes, which seem to do a very good job!

I’m also a recent convert to pressed powder (after whining about my make-up rubbing straight off) – I’m not sure how much powders would vary between products – so I’ve opted for a cheap Collection powder (£1.99) which seems to be doing the job perfectly. My newest Collection purchase is their much hyped Lasting Perfection concealer – and I’m in love! I read a few rave reviews before purchasing and it really lived up to my expectations. It covers perfectly, with good staying power and the price is very reasonable (£4.19). I found the application, coverage and staying power to be better than my last concealer, Boi-ing by Benefit, which was a whopping £17.50!

I’ve been using the Bourjois Blush Exclusif for several months now, and I still consider it a bit of a magic product. The colour of the blush adapts to your skin tone, creating a personalised and unique glow for your cheeks. That sounds totally made up, but when I purchased the concealer it was a warm-peachy colour, and as soon as I touched it, it turned a cool fuchsia (which I suppose compliments my pale skin). I’d be interested to see what other colours it will turn – so if you’ve purchased the product too, let me know!

Eyes

15

Eyes are probably the most important element of my look, a look I’ve worn since I was about fifteen – discovering Alexa Chung’s catwinged eyeliner was a big turning point in my beauty regime. I’ve shown you a lot of products here, but I frequently dash out to work having only slicked on my eyeliner. I’ve been using the Rimmel Exaggerate liner for years – I’ve tried other products but I always come back to this, my old faithful. I’d be interested to try Alexa’s Eyeko products, but I need to save up the pennies! If I’m trying to look more dramatic and done-up (by day to night make up hardly varies) I add some kohl to my lower waterline – Rimmel’s Scandal Eyes works very well, but use it sparingly!

Because I’m always wearing fairly thick eyeliner, I tend to skip mascara as you can’t see my lashes! But on the odd occasion I do wear it, Soap and Glory’s Thick and Fast  does the trick! It makes the lashes appear very thick and long with minimal effort – so for all of you mascara buffs, this is one to try!

Back on the Revlon Colorstay brand, the 16 Hour Eyeshadow Palette has everything I need in the colour department. I’ve purchased two palettes, Moonlit and Siren, one a nude/brown and the other a selection of greys – highly pigmented without being strong enough to overpower my pale skin. Each palette comes with enough colours to create a dramatic smoky eye (they even come with suggestions on how to create one), but I need to sweep a pale colour across my lid and swoop a darker colour across the socket line, because I’ve pretty lazy and low maintenance (make-up wise, that is!).

Finally, when I want to touch up my brows I use a single pot of eyeshadow from Natural Collection – so much better than using a pencil in my opinion! I know a lot of brands create specific products for eyebrows, but these tend to cost a bomb and my £1.79 shadow has worked perfectly well so far! I apply it with an angled liner brush, which helps me to create a good shape. I’m not actually wearing brow powder in the picture above, but when I do use it, it’s to give my brows a bit more shape and fill in the gaps (I don’t need any thickener, as you can see).

Lips

16

I am one of those people who owns 20 lipsticks, and only wears a couple. Do you know what I’ve realised? Lipstick is not the way to go. I’m currently favouring Revlons Colorburst Matte and Lacquer Balms (pictures are my two favourite colours – Demure and Flirtacious) which give a strong colour in a highly moisture rich balm – unlike that horrible cakey dry texture you get with some lipsticks (shudder!).  They also smell utterly delightful, just sayin’. This week I purchased Barry M’s Gelly Hi Shine Lips in Sirius and it’s a new favourite – I’m wearing it in the pictures. It’s a pen style, like the Colorbust balm, but produces a lip-gloss style sheen. Amazing. The colour is great, as is the staying power – there’s one thing that bothers me – there’s no twisty bottom like a lipstick, so what happens when the nib runs down, which won’t be long as it’s only an inch or so long?

When I’m not wearing any lip colour, I try to apply some Lip Therapy vaseline, which has a nice rosy tinge and keeps my lips in great condition through the tough winter months and dry summer days. It’s certainly one of those beauty must-haves – especially as you can buy it for about £1!

Did you enjoy my beauty post? Which are your favourite products?

Spring is Sprung.

It’s officially Spring time! 1Excuse the pictorial pun – but wasn’t today such a lovely Spring day?

Aside from barely leaving the house, today has been pretty perfect. After a much needed lie in, I watched A Hard Day’s Night (I really love the Beatles, and thought this film was hilarious), baked Rocky Road – setting as we speak!- and tested a few new purchases. Perfection!

I may have been a little naughty on Friday and splurged just a little bit on the Boots 3-for-2 sale – I’ll be doing a haul this week to show you the few items I gleefully gleaned (including a rapidly growing collection of Revlon ColourBurst Balms, oops!). Does anyone know when 3-for-2 ends? There’s definitely a few things I still need – I’m planning to ransack the Soap and Glory bath and body line, as well as a few hair care necessities. Yes, necessities, guys.

Friday’s Frivolity

But Friday’s frivolity means I had some pretty new things to show you!

I don’t usually ‘do’ trousers, so these checked tube trousers from Miss Selfridge were a bit of a surprise wardrobe addition, but I love them! For me, they’re the perfect balance of retro (is it just me who is reminded of Audrey Hepburn/ Marilyn Monroe with these checks?) and contemporary. They’re insanely comfortable, with a legging-like fit and, unlike a lot of high waisted trousers, they fit perfectly around the waist. The turn-over hems look great with boots, but I wasn’t sure how I’d style them on top. Today’s scalloped Topshop vest looks alright, right? Next I’d like to try a pastel hued silky cami – has anyone seen them anywhere? I can already tell I’ll be wearing these checkered beauties all the time – they might have turned me to trousers!

This is my fourth ColourBurst balm- I now have a pale pink, a red, a nude and a fuchsia, so I think I’m all set! This is a great colour for Spring as it’s very fresh and bright, as well as super light on and hydrating. I often struggle with lip colour, feeling that nothing is ever quite the right colour; and texture-wise, sticky lip gloss and dry traditional lipsticks are also a big no-no – so these balms have been a genuine life saver and have really reignited my love of lippy. I’ll be bringing you the full Revlon haul later this week!

My love for cats and all things feline related have definitely been well documented on She Wore Ribbon, so I don’t expect any of you are the least bit surprised to learn that when I saw this mini cat bag in H&M I squealed and ran straight to the counter to buy it. It’s very little, so I won’t be fitting more than a lippy, keys and a debit card inside, but handbag variety is the spice of life.

I hope you all had a beautiful day today, I most certainly enjoyed my movie watching, baking and garden stroll! Here’s to an even better Sunday!

I found this guy in my garden, he took an immediate shine to the Chelsea boots! What are your favourite Spring pieces?

Saturday’s Shopping

I adore Saturdays. The freedom to wake up whenever you want, no work, no bedtimes… It’s heavenly, My other motive for loving Saturday is because, more often than not, this is when I go shopping. And, you know me, I love shopping.

I wasn’t looking to make any extravagant purchases – I’m still trying to pay off that ole graudate overdraft and save for my Paris holiday in June (I don’t think I’d mentioned that before – so hooray, Paris!). I generally just like window shopping, getting a hot drink, relaxing, catching up with people and maybe buying a little something-something.

La Roche-Posay

There was really only one thing I was looking for in town this weekend – the La Roche-Posay effaclar duo cream. Although I’m 22, I’m the unfortunate owner of some pretty ‘teenage’ skin. In other words, it sucks. I’d read some pretty rave reviews about the Duo cream, so thought it high time to try it out. I’ve embraced the higher price range anti-blemish lines before – Vichy and Clinique, but neither were fantastic for me. Third time lucky I hope! As Boots was running a 3-for-2 offer, I decided to grab the foam wash and toner of the same range to really go for it! I’ll be taking a picture every night, a kind of photo diary, to keep track of whether these products live up to their claims: correcting blemishes, fighting marks, controlling shine, unblocking and minimising pores and refining the skin texture, with a noticeable change after 24 hours and dramatically improved skin after four weeks. I don’t think I’ll be posting the day by day transformation online (no one wants to see that!) but if it works I’ll be more than happy to take and upload a make-up less snap or provide a ‘before and after’ comparison. I used the products for the first time last night and I must say so far, so good. My skin felt clean and soft and didn’t have that tight/dry sensation you get with other cleansers. I’ll keep you posted with the progress!skincare

Revlon Nail Art Chalkboard

The only other thing I wanted in town was the Collection concealer that just about everyone has been blogging about for the last few months. Apparently this stuff works like a dream, and as it’s only in the £4-5 price range I thought it was worth a try. Unfortunately, for the second time this month, it was out of stock (must be good, eh?). So after stumbling upon this Chalkboard effect polish by Revlon I thought I’d treat myself, in lieu of the concealer. If I’m honest, I also thought ‘amazing, this will go perfectly with my pink coat!’, but that’s really lame, so we’ll pretend I didn’t say that. The polish is double ended; one end consists of a matte black polish of which you apply two coats (it really does look a bit chalkboard-y thanks to the matte effect) and a colour end which you use for your design. There were five colours: Straight A’s (white), Liberal Arts (blue), Home Coming (lilac), Over Achiever (pink) and Study Date (peach) – I pinked the pink one!

chalkboard

I am by no means a nail artist, so my success and efforts were pretty minimal. I just stuck to a simple dots and stripes pattern – although I’ve seen lovely lightening bolts, plaid checks and all sorts on Pinterest and Instagram. You can even mix a couple of colours together an create an abstract design – I think I’d be tempted by Liberal Arts or Home Coming to go with my Over Achiever!

Lilac Roses

Do you have a favourite flower? If you do, let me know what it is in the comments section. I have no clue what my favourites are – possibly because I’m a bit of a fake flower fanatic; they last forever, stay in perfection condition and you never have to water them! However, when I was on my way to grab a reviving Signature Hot Chocolate from Starbucks (my current hot beverage addiction), a flower stall man called out to me with: “Ladies! All these flowers are just £1”. Well, £1 for a big bunch of flowers!? I settled on these lilac roses because the colour was so beautiful and delicate. Maybe these could be my new favourite flower? When I woke up this morning they were indeed a beautiful sight!

I’ll keep you updated with my new beauty regime – keep your fingers crossed!

Vintage Style Me

My Vintage Style Me addiction shows no signs of slowing and this week a beautiful new addition to my wardrobe arrived – just in time to blow away those gloomy winter cobwebs!

You might be thinking ‘this is really more of a Spring/Summer dress’ – and you’d be right. The beautifully light cotton, short sleeves and floaty silhouette will be perfect for a sunny afternoon, but I couldn’t resist donning this charming heart print in time for Valentines Day!

Wrap Up Warm

Another reason to love my new heart smock? I’ve finally found something that goes with my pink fluffy coat (ASOS) and knitted pom-pom scarf (Topshop)! Rest assured, this is a combination you’ll be seeing me in a lot!6a

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Did you notice the new ‘do? Admittedly it’s not the most dramatic cut, but I think I’ve found my look in a blunt fringe and below shoulder length – so it won’t be changing anytime soon! My ends were pretty wrecked – let that be a lesson to anyone forgoing a hair cut, so I had to say goodbye to a few inches. I love my new cut though, it feels so much thicker and healthier and reminds me of Anna Karina’s hair – I’m a happy bunny! Thank you Toni & Guy!

Stay posted for a Valentines Day post on Friday – I’ll be sharing everything I love!

January Cosmetics Haul

I’ve been a bit of a busy bee this weekend! On Saturday I took a trip to Southampton for a friend’s birthday. I managed to resist the lure of West Quay shopping- bar a cheeky purchase or two in The Body Shop and Accessorize! In the evening I made my first visit to Cafe Rouge for a family meal. The food was delicious and rather beautiful (as you may have seen on my Twitter/Instagram feed). By Sunday I was in need of a quiet fay and took myself and a long shopping list of cosmetics to Boots, before heading home to watch Clueless – a perfect lazy Sunday. I’m finally starting to document my purchases, so this is my January Cosmetics Haul!

Zingy and Zangy…

These shower gels came highly recommended to me from my friends. I’m not a big Body Shop shopper, but these shower gels smell delicious – the orange is my favourite, although the other reminds me of Strawberry laces! Yum!

Sit back and relax…

After visiting Boots on Sunday, I had a quick look in a generic bargain home store and found these reduced price Montagne Jennesse face masks. It’s always worth stocking up on this sort of stuff, so I bought 3 for £2. My face will be imperfection-free by February.

hair care…

I am the ambivalent owner of rather fine, rather long hair. Whilst I’m fond of the length (except for the terrible tangles and knots) it can get weighed down and flat. I’ve always wanted thick long hair, so when I saw Mark Hill’s Big It Up shampoo and conditioner, I couldn’t resist. Happily I’d actually run out of shampoo, so the timing was perfect. I’ll let you know if it works! I also needed to reinvest in dry shampoo, having run out months ago. Batiste is one of my tried and tested brands, I figured I can’t go wrong there. To explain the clips purchase, I love to dry my hair using sectioning grips (as I’ve mentioned, I have a lot of hair) and as these were pretty cheap and could save me a few precious minutes everyday.

1c

 powder on and pucker up…

The top item on my shopping list was Collection 2000 Lasting Perfection concealer and I  La Roche Posay’s Effaclar Duo cream after reading rave reviews from bloggers and forum people alike. Both happened to be out of stock, which is pretty annoying, but I did cross off a couple of other products.

I’ve been neglecting face powder – which I know is bad because it increases the staying power of foundation and concealer by a lot. Having failed me in my hunt for concealer, Collection made up for it with a great face powder in my shade (i.e. vampire white) and a Deluxe Lipstick in a dark berry shade – I think it’s Prohibition. The last thing on my list was to try Revlon’s Colorburst Balm – I didn’t know which colour to buy and after a small tantrum (cosmetic shopping is difficult), I settled for a vintage pink called Elusive. Is it just me that gets stressed when it comes to picking lipstick shades? If anyone has colour suggestions I would really love to hear!

Summer Fix: Rainy Day Activities

Although it’s technically summer, we Brits have torrent of cloudy days, rainy spells and the odd hailstorm to contend with, even though we’d much rather be frolicking in the sun and eating ice cream. But hey, we don’t need sun to have fun! In honour of the British weather system, I’ve compiled a Top 10 list of Rainy Day Activities, to make sure every day of summer is fun, creative and productive!

  1. Make your own denim shorts: see here.
This guide is amazing: it contains everything from patterns, hemming, embellishments and dip-dye. There’s no excuse not to have a beautiful pair of shorts at the ready when the sun re-appears!

  2. Make snacks in a mug: see here.
All I’ve ever tried is the “chocolate cake in a mug”, but I’ll be sure to give a few of these a go! Beats having to do a shopping trip in the rain, right?
    mugs(Source: Buzzfeed)
  3. Make your own bikini!? : see here.
I honestly didn’t think a DIY bikini was something that could be done! There’s several cute ones here, particularly the bow and scalloped trim bikinis. Who knew you could even make them out of an old t-shirt?
    DIYBIKINI(Source: Buzzfeed)
  4. Make this beautiful summer blouse: see here
All you need is an old shirt, pins, scissors and a needle’n’thread/sewing machine. As far as making a blouse goes, this doesn’t look too complicated and results are perfectly lovely.

  5. Create a floral headband: see here
Regardless of whether you’re heading to a festival this summer, the floral headband is a great summer accessory!
    hairband(Source: Company Magazine)
  6. Create your own GLOW IN THE DARK bowling alley: see here
Surprisingly easy (as long as you have room!). Simply fill ten 2L bottles of water for the pins and add a glow stick to each. Grab a make-shift ball (I’m still trying to work out what would be heavy enough to knock down those bottles) and get bowling! You could even throw a glow in the dark party.

  7. Make a “fireflies in a jar” night latern
Super easy and very pretty. A definite “silver lining” to the darker nights the bad weather brings, eh?enhanced-buzz-4058-1340124669-24(Source: Buzzfeed)
  8. Make a photo-covered journal: see here.
It’s always a fun idea to keep a journal; be it a personal diary or a collection of cuttings for home decor, cooking ideas or fashion inspiration! Personalise the cover with a great photo and writing.

  9. Make Your Own Scrapbook: see here.
I love the idea of scrap-booking, but I’m definitely far from a pro. This afternoon I saw some amazing collages on Jazzabelle’s Diary from her sketchbooks, which I’ll share here for inspiration (I hope she doesn’t mind!). They’re so beautiful!  You could involve pictures of family, friends, trips and holidays, or alternatively, keep them inspirational like the pictures below:
    jazz jazz2 jazz3(Source: Jazzabelle’s Diary)
  10. Have an indoor picnic!
Just because it’s cold and grey outside doesn’t mean an end to the picnic season. You can have a perfectly good picnic indoors! Why not send your friends an invite?

SISTER VINTAGE

buntingnecklace rings skull

As promised, my most recent Sister Vintage haul! These guys are one of my favourite jewellery brands; their prices are fantastic (generally around the 50p – £3 mark) and their stock never fails to nail that “retro yet edgy” vibe. Tempted? I’d scamper over there sharpish, as I have just read their stock is running out fast!

I think I’ve finally succeeded in building my jewellery collection for summer (between this and 2 or 3 other Sister Vintage purchases!). When I browsed their site last week I was immediately attracted to this snake print bunting necklace – I love bunting and don’t yet own a “statement” necklace. The skull necklace is adorable (I love the little heart shaped eyes) and because it’s so simple, it will go with almost everything. I’m always on the look out for more rings and these stackable beauties are perfect – they come in a variety of sizes so you can wear them on any finger (or thumb) and you can even emulate the knuckle ring trend we’ve seen on celebrities like RiRi.

And don’t forget, you can get 10% off if you use the code NIKKIMC at the check out!

I hope you all have lovely evenings, possibly with a spot of online shopping for jewellery?

Lots of Love!

Bows and Ribbons

In honour of this blog’s title (and frankly my borderline obsession with all things ribbon) I’m sharing a few of my favourite Pinterest looks of the same vein.

ribbons bows

If I did more OOTD posts, you’d know I like to wear ribbon, almost daily. I have a ribbon of almost every colour to match every outfit! At about 30p a meter, it’s by far the cheapest hair accessory. Plus, it’s quite fun to have a signature look, although I am ostensibly bordering on cartoon character territory!

Where do you stand on bows and ribbons?

Finally, it’s time to part with a secret:  I am soon to start creating a small collection of hair bows, potentially with the view to sell a few! I cannot wait to start this exciting D.I.Y project!   I’ll make sure to keep you posted!

Have a fantastic week – I think I will actually do an OOTD post tomorrow – I have some new jewels courtesy of Sister Vintage to show off!

Love to you all!

The Great Gatsby: Luxury, Glamour and Miuccia Prada

Art deco fever is starting to set in as the release of celluloid version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s jazz age tale The Great Gatsby is imminent. Thanks to lashings of high-octane glitz and glamour, vast production values and a stellar cast under the direction of the incomparable Baz Luhrmann, it has become one of the most anticipated films of the summer.

At The Glass Pineapple we’re particularly excited about the glorious array of costumes, many of which are the product of the joint minds of costume designer Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada – a collaboration that came about when Prada and Miu Miu designs were inadvertently used in a screen test.

Martin and Prada worked together to create over 40 looks for the film’s two party scenes, all of which were inspired by the Prada and Miu Miu archives. The sparkles were provided by Tiffany and Martin worked with Brookes Brothers (a favourite of Fitzgerald’s) to come up with the male looks.

The costumes have been designed to evoke the prolific Twenties spirit without the confines of historical literality. As Martin said we are trying to express a story in a way in which Fitzgerald’s visceral modernity is able to transgress the plane of the screen.” Interestingly, the original Prada and Miu Miu pieces that inspired the costumes were not designed with the 1920s in mind, so it would seem that art deco style has inadvertently transcended an entire century!

Despite the obvious extravagance of the collection, for Miuccia Prada the costumes were not about luxury: “when I read [the book], it was psychological. It was not about glamour for me. It was a real [study of] personality, very internalised. It was meant to be about light. It became about money, because Luhrmann wanted to show her as the most beautiful and rich woman on earth.”

(Images courtesy of vogue.co.uk)

Prada recently released these four costume sketches that offer a tantalising teaser of the flapper-girl vibe and the extravagance of the Twenties, with Swarovski crystal and pearl embroidery, sequins, exquisite furs, velvets and tasselled hemlines. The inspiration behind several of these pieces seems rooted in Prada’s recent collections, in particular the orange sequin scaled dress, which bears a striking resemblance to a lemon scaled dress from the label’s AW11 show.

(Images courtesy of vogue.co.uk)

We also noticed a rehash of the classic Prada “chandelier” dress from the SS10 collection. The intricate design has hundreds of hanging crystal droplets, connected by a series of tiny hoops. It is a kind of decadent luxury ideal for ‘golden girl’ Daisy Buchannan, the object of desire Gatsby’s desire.

 (Images courtesy of vogue.co.uk)

It’s entirely possible that Gatsby style will be one of the major fashion inspirations over the coming months so get those drop waist dresses and sequin embellishments ready for garden parties, dancing and a deliciously decadent summer.

The Great Gatsby will be released in the UK on 16th May.
